AEP Director of Research Paul Bourgeois Ph.D. continued his partnership with the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) this week, publishing an article in the IAED Journal of Emergency Dispatch titled “Call to Action“. The article discusses findings from a 2015 study titled "Is Dispatching to a Traffic Accident as Stressful as Being in One? Acute Stress Disorder, Secondary Traumatic Stress, and Occupational Burnout in 911 Emergency Dispatchers", which found that Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) was found to be prevalent in emergency dispatchers at roughly the same level as people experiencing the trauma first-hand. Also included in the study is the effect of shift work on a dispatcher’s mental health and susceptibility towards developing ASD. These studies are of increasing importance, especially as the call to classify dispatchers as first responders grows throughout the nation.
